The hardest and most valuable lesson I have ever learned is to question even my base assumptions. The fact of the matter is that we are all indoctrinated. Though the term “indoctrination” has acquired a negative connotation for past generations, indoctrination is not inherently bad. It’s how we learn to do everything from dress ourselves to shake hands. Indoctrination is at the core of every culture, every society, every collective, and has equal potential to be sustaining and destructive. It is necessary. Most of us will have been indoctrinated by loving and well-meaning parents. Others won’t have been so lucky. Regardless, most of us will experience conflict in our lives where experiences or beliefs butt right up against our indoctrination. The immediate response is visceral, and truly availing yourself to questioning your base assumptions is difficult and taxing. Doing so is SO important. I cannot understate how important it is to question your core beliefs/understanding of the world. Why? Because if you cannot question them, then you cannot shed them if they are wrong, and wrong core beliefs are the source of the worst pain and conflict that humanity has ever seen. Everything horrible from terrorism and genocide to the indifference of good men is perpetuated via indoctrination. Never assume you’re not susceptible.
Also addressed in this song is the concept of willful ignorance. Those who would rather not know things that challenge them to adapt their perspective are willfully ignorant. To those people I would say, ignorance is ignorance, whether you are comfortable there or not.
lyrics
Love, tell me no lies
I can see it in your eyes
love’s a ghost, love’s a prison here
in this world we made
we must make room for the grave
of a one that we both hold dear
Broken eyes don’t cry
Never say goodbye
Let you waste your time on me…
We’re made to believe
that the truth will set you free
then we’re taught not to wander far
from the fold we know,
even though in letting go
we might see beyond our own scars
broken eyes don’t cry
never say goodbye
let you waste your time on me…
go and make your way
or you won’t live to say
I’ve done all that I can do here
don’t regret the cost, love
‘cause life is full of loss
speak your truth and the world will hear
broken eyes don’t cry
never say goodbye
let you waste your time on me…
broken eyes don’t cry
never say goodbye
let you waste your life…
